What is CRI?
Cyber Risk Insights is a cutting-edge SaaS platform designed to empower businesses with comprehensive analytics and insights for managing cyber risk effectively. As part of our continuous effort to enhance user experience and engagement, we identified the insight page as a critical touchpoint needing improvement.
The Focus
This case study delves into the redesign of the CRI Insights page, highlighting my contributions as a product designer. It will cover the journey from identifying initial user experience issues to implementing a redesigned Insight page that not only meets but exceeds user expectations.
The Impact
The new design significantly reduced the time and effort required for users to access insights, resulting in improved user satisfaction and increased engagement.
Problem
Users are struggling to access important insights due to a hidden Insight page, unclear data input sources, and an interface burdened by cluttered information, as well as an outdated design.
Idea Exploration
Discovery & Ideation
The design journey began with an ideation phase, where sketches and wireframes translated user needs into tangible design concepts. Through collaborative brainstorming sessions, I explored various styles that can be used on the insights page, most of them used modules and blocks but in different placements

Redesign Principles
After several iterations, we identified the key principles guiding our redesign. Our focus centred on creating a modular design, prioritising user ease in locating desired sections. We aimed to reduce complex workflows and tables, shifting the emphasis towards immediate access to insightful information right from the start. The redesigned framework aimed for a streamlined workflow, condensing steps while presenting insights in a storytelling format. This approach aimed to enhance user engagement by offering a more intuitive and story-driven user experience.
User Testing
We conducted four user testing sessions with actual users, using Post-it notes to prioritise features into must-have, should-have, and could-have categories. Additionally, we employed different coloured Post-it notes to categorise aspects as working well, not working, or missing. This colour-coded system facilitates a more straightforward analysis of results in the later stages of our evaluation.
User Testing Analysis
I proceeded to analyse the results by grouping the Post-it notes according to their respective screens. This allowed us to identify common themes across the feedback, enabling us to generate innovative ideas and solutions.
Key Finding
-
Having a universal language is key
-
Ability to change perspective on data (storytelling)
-
The clarity of maths is important
-
Confidence in data, where they are coming and going
Data Input and Output Mapping
Through the user interview, we have noticed a significant challenge. How can we enhance the transparency and clarity around the data inputs required for generating insights and where these insights were coming from?
To enhance this, we collaborated closely with the modeling team. Together, we mapped out the precise data inputs required and their corresponding outputs, ensuring users had clear guidance on how their information would generate specific insights. This collaboration was pivotal in demystifying the process for users and informing the design later on.
Key Improvements
Holistic View and Usability
Each module is designed to provide a comprehensive yet concise summary of the data, ensuring users can quickly understand their cyber risk posture without being overwhelmed by details. The layout facilitates an intuitive navigation experience, allowing users to effortlessly digest a wealth of information through a well-organised and visually appealing interface.
Intuitive Navigation
Recognising the importance of efficient data management, we introduced an "empty data screen" feature. This innovation allows users to directly navigate to specific sections for data editing, significantly enhancing the platform's usability. Users can now seamlessly update or modify their data inputs, ensuring the insights remain relevant and tailored to their current needs.
Flexible Access
One of the most transformative aspects of the redesigned user flow is the flexibility it offers users in accessing insights. Users are no longer required to follow a linear path to reach the insights waiting at the journey's end. Instead, insights are dynamically integrated throughout the platform, available from any point within the system. This approach ensures that users can access relevant, valuable information exactly when they need it, making the exploration of cyber risk management more efficient and user-friendly.
Incomplete or Missing Data
Another critical aspect of cyber risk management is the ability to compare current risk assessments with past data or hypothetical scenarios. Our redesign focused on making this comparison process as intuitive and informative as possible:
Diverse Use Cases
Interactive Elements
In refining the Cyber Risk Insights platform, I have given special attention to the design and functionality of interactive elements, such as drop-down menus and pop-ups. These elements are crucial for facilitating user interactions, such as selecting comparison data, checking benchmarking data on charts, and accessing additional information.
Next Steps
Continuous User Feedback Collection: Establish a structured process for continuously gathering user feedback on recent updates and identifying areas for further improvement or refinement on the features.
Integration of AI and Machine Learning: Investigate the potential integration of AI and machine learning technologies to personalise the user experience and automate the analysis of cyber risk data, making the insights even more actionable.
Lesson Learnt
The Power of Collaboration: Working closely with cross-functional teams, including the modeling team and technology developers, enriches the design process. Such collaboration ensures that the final product is not only visually appealing but also technically sound and deeply integrated with the platform's core functionalities.
Iterative Design and Testing: Engaging in an iterative design process, including continuous testing and feedback loops, helps identify issues early and allows for refinements that significantly enhance the final product.
